The story

The Mogods range in north-west Tunisia has forest, coast and villages that see almost no visitors. What it did not have was anybody selling the walk between them.

An €18,000 grant funded waymarking, safety equipment, guide training and a booking site that takes an international card — the four things that separated an informal weekend walk from a business a European tour operator would list. Marketing focused on shoulder season, because a business that only earns in August is not a business.

The operator now works with four villages, employs nine trained guides and has taken more than 500 visitors along the trail, most of them outside the July–August peak. Guesthouses along the route take the beds.

The trail always existed. What we bought was the ability for somebody in Lyon to book it on a Tuesday.
